Storytime about Snow!

Snowballs by Lois Ehlert
After all the snow in Maine, it is the perfect time to tell a story about snowmen.  Lois Ehlert uses wonderful pictures to show household items being used to give snowmen their own unique personalities.  For example, Spot the dog uses buttons – how clever! I love how this book flips around to showcase the art.  Curious to know what I mean by “flipping the book around”?  Check out a quick reading of this lovely book after the jump and see for yourself!

Snowmen Rhymes and Fingerplays

The Snowman

A chubby little snowman (make round tummy with arms)
With a carrot nose (point to nose)
Along came a rabbit (hold up two fingers like ears & make rabbit hop)
And what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny (rub tummy)
Looking for his lunch (pretend to look around)
Ate that little snowman’s nose (point to nose)
Nibble, nibble, CRUNCH! (nibble motion with hand & clap loudly on CRUNCH)

Five Little Snowmen

Five little snowmen (hold up 5 fingers)
Standing in a row
Each with a hat (touch head)
And a big red bow (tie bow under chin)
Out came the sun
And it stayed all day
And one little snowman (hold up 1 finger)
Melted away! (finger bends down)
(continue until zero.  If children are younger or impatient, use 3 snowmen)

Building a Snowman

First the body, then the head (pretend to make snowman)
A big black had and a scarf of red (point to head and wrap scarf)
Coal pieces for eyes, a carrot nose (point to eyes, then nose)
And a mouth of pebbles in a smiling row! (smile and point to mouth)

Sledding  (sung to Row Row Row Your Boat)
Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch (walk fingers on arm)
Up the hill so slow (continue walk fingers up arm)
Sliding, sliding, sliding, sliding, sliding
Down the hill we go! (slide fingers down arm)

Snowman Craft
This one is simple and requires very few materials.  They can even be made out of popcorn!
