Summer Reading Program 2015

Grab your cape and your mask because this year's summer Reading Program is all about superheroes. 

We provide exciting books to read as well as guests, stories, songs, games, crafts and other activities. Programs are open to young people through fifth grade.  All events are free. Children may sign up as a reader or listener, or both. Registration begins June 22th.  Register at the Children’s Desk or online.

On, Monday, June 22nd @ 4 PM, the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers will kick start our summer. Little Chucky heads to the Wild West to outwit outlaws in this cowboy adventure!  With a fistful of bananas, Chucky rides into town on his trusty goat for a showdown with Big Bad Bart and his gang of bandits.  (*please note that there are no guns in the show). “The Legend of the Banana Kid” features 20 hand-crafted glove, mouth and rod puppets, and a slew of flying and twirling Styrofoam bananas.! Length of show: approx. 45 minutes Recommended audience: ages 4 and up

          Mondays @ 11 AM is Super Crafting with MaryAnn. Get your tool belt ready with these supercrafts by one of our favorite Super Heroes! Craft everything from shields, to puppets, to spider webs to help defend our city!
          Tuesdays @ 11 AM is Super Hero Story Time. Even the strongest super heroes need strong brains to fight crime! Get your brain trained by learning from the best super heroes in this story time filled with crafts, stories and songs!  (ages 5 and up)
          Wednesdays @ 10:15 AM is Mother Goose with Megan. Our littlest super heroes (0—2) get in on the action! This 20-minute story time will get your little one ready to be the side kick of any super hero! With books, bouncy rhymes and songs, don’t miss out on shaking the sillies out!
          Wednesdays @ 11 AM is Tiny Tots with Megan. As your super hero grows, so does the need for speed! Super stories,  songs, games, and crafts for your super toddler (ages 2—4)!
         Thursdays @ 11 AM is Meet a Read Hero and See a Superhero Movie. Hear a story from a local hero then join us as we watch a   “hero” movie with popcorn!! (List of movies available at the Children’s Desk.)
          Fridays @ 11 AM is Super Foods with Shane. It’s fudge! It’s Ice Cream! It’s SUPER FOOD!! Watch as Shane creates foods that WOW your taste buds! From super sweet to super sour and everywhere in between, you’ll have super strength from these super foods.

Our Summer Reading Finale will be on Friday, August 7th @ 11 AM. Are you ready for some SUPER SCIENCE?!?!?! We have our lab cape on and are ready to show off some super-cool super hero science! Outrunning bullet trains...super sped-up senses….robotic exoskeletons...telekinesis….we’ve got the coolest super powers covered! Join us for the Summer Reading Finale, as we welcome Mad Science of Maine as they experiment with some cool tools from their utility belt! Witness the Mad Scientist morphing into Magneto and attract metal objects to their lab coat! They even demonstrate their own jet pack to jump start your super power daydream!! (Disclaimer: they do not actually leave the ground with the jet pack.) Behind every super power, there is SCIENCE!  

Come back for another special event on Monday, August 10th @ 11 AM for Chewonki-Hero Adaptations. Many of the world's most beloved superheroes are inspired by animals living in your backyard! Ever wonder if their powers and abilities could actually exist in the natural world? We will present two of these iconic figures and draw connections between their powers and the adaptations of their animal counterparts. The fun concludes with a close-up look at a third live animal and the opportunity for participants to enter into a statewide contest to create their own owl-inspired superhero.
