Fairly Fairy Tales by Esme Raji Codell and Elisa Chavarri

Book CoverThis book plays with the question: What if a modern, everyday objects were added to classic fairy tales. A bottle of shampoo and Red Riding Hood gives way to Grandma's Beauty Salon. The Three Little Pigs add solar panels to their home, The Giant from Jack and the Beanstalk owns a Italian Restaurant, and a few more interested twists on fairy tales. While the book isn't told in regular plot format, adults and children will enjoy the possibilities of making up their own stories. This book is great for ages three and up.

Oops! by Colin McNaughton

Mr. Wolf is forgetful and confused. Preston Pig is clumsy. Mr. Wolf is
Book Coverhungry, and Preston is on the menu. Combining elements of the "The Three Little Pigs" and "Little Red Riding Hood," McNaugton has turned these two fairy tales on their heads in a clever story about a pig whose clumsiness saves him from being eaten. Mr. Wolf is a great narrator and his plans always go awry. Great for K-2nd graders.

Jake Gander, Storyville Detective by George McClements

Jake Gander, a cop in Storyville, has been asked by Red R. Hood who thinks someone is impersonating her granny. Can he solve the case or will he need some help? I really enjoyed all the references to other fairy tales sprinkled throughout the book. I also enjoyed the book's pace which is  reminiscent  of 1930's hard boiled detectives stories, and while the illustrations are in bright, vivid colors, Jake is in black, white, and gray colors. Great for ages 8 and up.
