Storytime, Rhymes, and Fingerplays for Shark Storytime!

Hello again!  It's Jessica and I'm happy to share some information about this week's theme: sharks!  We have some wonderful picture books on these interesting sea creatures.  The shark books deal with really neat ideas, such as "have you ever seen a shark in your park?" and "in a contest between a Shark and a Train, who do you think would win?"

Find out in these books below.  You will also be able to see the fingerplays and songs from this week's Storytime.

If you like Mo Willems....

If you like Mo Willems' Pigeon stories, I would like to introduce you to two books with a similar sensibility that really tickled my funny bone!

The first is Can You Make a Scary Face? by Jan Thomas. The main character, a ladybug, asks us to do many things, some quite silly. Each command leads to another. When the story finally  becomes too much for her, she asks us to make a scary face to frighten away her creation. It is great fun to watch children make, what they think, are the scariest faces imaginable! Here is an author who writes with preschool story time in mind!

The second book is New Socks by Bob Shea. This little chick is hard to resist. He is soooo happy with his new socks, he can't wait to tell you about them. He gets quite carried away with excitement! I think many parents will recognize their own little ones in this chick's enthusiastic chatter.

Both Jan Thomas and Bob Shea create stories that are wonderful to read aloud to small children. Their characters often speak directly to the reader/listener and have enough humor to keep parents happily re-reading them! ENJOY!

Clicking on the book cover will bring you to the reserve page for that title.

Wolf’s Coming by Joe Kulka

I really like this book because of the twist at the end. You think know why the forest creatures are running from the shadowy wolf, but the end really catches you off guard with a humorous and cute surprise. Each page is filled with little details, such the wolf’s pet spider. This book is great for any preschooler because of the easy-to-learn rhymes.

Mail Harry to the Moon! By Robie H. Harris and Illustrated by Michael Emberley

Having a new baby brother in the house is very exciting, but not for this little boy. Baby Harry spits up, chews stuffed gorilla, and cries all night, and his big brother has had it! He thinks that Mom and Dad should mail Harry to the moon! When the brother wakes up one morning and can’t find Harry, he goes on a mission to rescue Harry from the moon. I get a kick out of all of the big brother’s ideas on what his parents should do with the new baby. The big brother’s various facial expressions are priceless! This book is a great read for kids who are going to be new brothers or new sisters.
